What Happens During a Neuropsychological Assessment?

Being referred for a neuropsychological assessment can raise a lot of questions. People may wonder what happens during the sessions, what information they need to bring, how the assessment is structured and what they will receive afterwards.

At Mizu, a neuropsychological assessment is individually tailored to the person’s circumstances and the specific referral question. There is no single fixed set of tests that every person completes.

What Is a Neuropsychological Assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment explores cognitive, neurological and related functioning in relation to a specific referral question.

Depending on the circumstances, areas such as attention, memory, executive functioning, language, developmental functioning or broader cognitive functioning may be explored. The purpose is to develop a clearer understanding of the areas relevant to the individual rather than to assess every possible area in every person.

Step 1: The Formal Intake

The assessment process begins with a formal intake consultation. This provides an opportunity to understand the referral question, relevant background information and the concerns that have led to the assessment.

For clients under 18, parents or caregivers take part in the formal intake consultation. Adults may attend independently or may choose to bring their parents if this would be helpful in providing background information.

The intake helps guide the assessment process and identify which areas may need further exploration.

What Information Should You Bring?

Relevant background information can provide useful context for the assessment. Depending on the individual and the referral question, this may include previous assessment reports, medical or professional reports, school reports or teacher feedback where relevant.

It is also helpful to provide any other information that may relate to the reason for referral. Mizu can advise during the intake process if additional documents or information would be useful.

Step 2: Assessment Sessions

The assessment takes place across multiple individually tailored sessions. The exact process depends on the referral question and the areas that need to be explored.

Information gathered during earlier stages of the assessment can also help guide what needs to be considered further. This means the assessment develops according to the individual rather than following one identical sequence for every person.

What Areas May Be Explored?

Not every person will be assessed in every area. The areas considered depend on the individual’s circumstances and referral question.

Where relevant, the assessment may explore areas such as:

  • Cognitive functioning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Memory
  • Executive functioning
  • Language-related functioning
  • Developmental functioning
  • Emotional or behavioural functioning where relevant
  • Social functioning where relevant

The purpose is to explore the areas that are meaningful to the referral question rather than to complete an unnecessary fixed battery.

Does Everyone Complete the Same Tests?

No. A neuropsychological assessment is individually tailored.

The specific assessment methods used depend on the referral question, the individual’s background and information gathered during the assessment process. Findings from earlier stages may also help guide which areas require further exploration.

This allows the assessment to remain focused on the questions that need clarification.

Step 3: The Written Report

Once the assessment process is complete, the findings are integrated into a detailed written report.

The report considers the findings in relation to the referral question and the individual’s circumstances. Relevant recommendations are included where appropriate.

The aim is not simply to present scores or isolated results, but to bring the information together in a way that helps explain the findings meaningfully.

Step 4: Formal Feedback

A formal feedback consultation is included as part of the assessment process.

During this consultation, the findings are explained and the report can be discussed. Relevant recommendations and possible next steps are also clarified.

This gives the client, or parents and caregivers where appropriate, an opportunity to understand how the different findings fit together.

How Long Does a Neuropsychological Assessment Take?

There is no single fixed number of sessions that applies to everyone. Neuropsychological assessment takes place across multiple sessions, and the exact process depends on the individual circumstances and referral question.

Because the assessment is tailored, the amount of information that needs to be explored may differ from one person to another.

What Happens After the Assessment?

After the written report and feedback consultation, recommendations can help guide the next steps relevant to the individual and the original referral question.

The assessment findings should always be understood in context. Recommendations are therefore based on the individual circumstances and the information gathered during the assessment rather than on a predetermined outcome.
