PARENT COUNSELLING, GUIDANCE & FAMILY SUPPORT
A particular emphasis at Mizu Therapy & Assessment is to provide child support, parent counselling, guidance & family support. Family support are provided for parents in the form of parent counselling and guidance. Parents are essential in reinforcing newfound coping skills learnt in therapy, that may result in changes and growth in children. Child support is provided in the form of emotional and remedial support to improve academic performance.
Parental guidance
When children attend therapy, their parents can play a vital role in the degree to which they apply the coping strategies that they learn in therapy, in their everyday lives. Additionally, parents are actively supported by helping them deal with complicated child behaviour, such as tantrums, anxiety, and acting out behaviour. Parental education regarding specific disorders is also done as needed, with a view to provide a parent with sufficient information regarding a child’s mental health and which lead to a change in strategies with which parents handle their children.
Family Support
When a family member is diagnosed with a disorder, it can be traumatic for the family. Psycho-education is done to improve families’ understanding of their loved one, and the position in which they find themselves emotionally, socially and physically. Families are supported in terms of strategies to deal with unusual behaviours that the family member may display. The family members’ own feelings regarding a diagnosis are also explored.
Child Support
A child’s emotions regarding the diagnosis of a parent/sibling/family member, are considered. Psycho-education provides accurate information regarding the diagnosis and a child explores strategies to cope with their own emotional response.
Remedial Support
After a child has been diagnosed with reading, spelling and mathematical difficulties, he/she/it probably need remedial instruction by someone who understands his/her/its challenges. This entails one-on-one instruction and the learning of strategies to improve academic performance.
