NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS
WHAT ARE NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS?
Neuropsychological assessments are formal, comprehensive examinations of an individual’s cognitive abilities (i.e. memory, attention, problem-solving, processing speed, visual-spatial skills) to understand the individual brain-behaviour relationship. Neuropsychological assessments are only done by registered neuropsychologists or licensed psychologists specially trained in neuropsychology.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS?
Neuropsychological assessments are most frequently requested to provide additional information about developmental disorders. Most commonly, referral questions concern medical disorders or diseases, including genetic disorders, concussion or traumatic brain injuries; brain tumours or brain cancer; and other neurological issues.
Persons living with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, mathematical disorder or dyscalculia, spelling disorder, dysgraphia and other learning disabilities are also commonly referred for neuropsychological assessments. Psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression, and behavioural dysregulation are referred for evaluation to more fully understand the child’s struggles and to provide recommendations for intervention in the home and at school.
