WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY FORENSIC ASSESSMENTS?

Forensic assessments are evaluations/tests performed to accurately document an individuals’ past and present neuropsychological functioning. These assessments are normally requested by an attorney or legal entity in order to document an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in a certain situation, such as a motor vehicle accident, disability claim, traumatic brain injury or concussion.

A forensic neuropsychological assessment will contain reliable and valid psychological and neuropsychological data pursuant to the individual’s emotional/cognitive/behavioural functioning as applied to legal proceedings, and specific forensic questions posed by attorneys and courts will be answered. Additional information regarding brain-behaviour relationships, psychiatric and neurological disorders, and neuroimaging in legal cases are provided.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF FORENSIC NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS?

Forensic neuropsychological assessments are often required by legal (Attorneys) and or medical entities (medical aids) in cases of concussion, stroke, dementia and traumatic brain injury. Neuropsychological testing is helpful in specifying the origin, severity, and development of a disorder.  It can be used to gauge the effects of the disorder on a person’s emotional, social and academic functioning, such as a person’s employability and ability to live independently.

Customized recommendations are then made to assist the court, medical aid and individual person to make informed decisions regarding a person’s future and to create a specific treatment plan.
