WHAT ARE SCHOOL READINESS ASSESSMENTS?

As the term suggests, School Readiness Assessments are formal assessments conducted by registered educational psychologists that determines whether a child is ready to enter primary schooling. Tests are used to examine critical developmental aspects to assess the children’s degree of school readiness. These include physical, sensory and motor development, emotional and social development, cognitive development, language development and emotional maturity skills.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ASSESSMENT AND A SCREENING?

A screening refers to a cursory assessment to obtain information regarding a specific issue, whereas an in-depth assessment focuses not only on a diagnosis, but also to ‘describes’ a person’s specific abilities and areas of concern.  This knowledge may be used to improve understanding of him/her/it, to make informed choices regarding a person’s academic, emotional and social functioning, leading to improved mental health and cohesion.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SCHOOL READINESS ASSESSMENTS?

School Readiness Assessments are generally a prerequisite to enrolling a child into primary school. This assessment is normally conducted with children (Grade R and Grade 0). Its aim is to identify possible developmental shortfalls that may affect learning and development. Failure to identify such challenges may adversely affect a child’s entire school career.

The importance of school readiness is thus not only in allowing your child to be enrolled in formal schooling but also in identifying key developmental areas in which a child may struggle. Such identified areas of concern, in turn, allow primary caregivers and teachers to expand and develop a child’s skills in the specific areas of possible complications.  These areas include social interaction, play, emotional development, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy or fine motor skills.
