COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY?
Cognitive behavioral therapy relates to psychotherapy and aims to alter the negative patterns of thinking about the self and the world in order to change unwanted behaviour patterns or to treat mood disorders such as depression or low self-esteem.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a powerful therapy approach that assists an individual in recognising negative, unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns. At Mizu Therapy & Assessment, our educational psychologists combine CBT therapy with various other chosen therapies best suited to each child’s individual needs. Often, children cannot process their emotions/feelings or articulate problems they might be experiencing. By utilising CBT, our educational psychologists can observe and understand a child’s problems and help the child explore the emotions, unresolved trauma and their reactions to them. Through this CBT process, the child is guided to learn new coping skills and mechanisms and redirect unfavourable behaviours.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY?
The main aim of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is to teach children that while they cannot control every aspect of what happens in the world around them, they can take control of how they interpret and respond to what happens around them. CBT aims to help children identify and explore the ways their emotions and thoughts can affect their actions.
CBT combines behavioural therapy with cognitive therapy. Various other therapies such as counselling therapy, play therapy and or sand tray therapy (to name a few) are combined with CBT to capitalise on the child’s natural ability to express their feelings and in doing so assist in the process of identifying negative thought patterns/behaviours. Behavioural and problem-solving techniques are essential in CBT. The techniques are dependent on the conceptualisation of the child, the difficulty the child is dealing with, and the objectives for the session.
