SAND TRAY THERAPY
WHAT IS SAND TRAY THERAPY?
Sand Tray Therapy is a form of nonverbal educational play therapy (under the guidance of a registered educational psychologist/therapist), making use of a sandbox and figures to create scenes of miniature worlds that reflects the child’s inner feelings, thoughts, struggles and concerns. Sand tray therapy is commonly practised together with talk therapy, whereby the sandbox and figures are used as communication tools.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SAND TRAY THERAPY?
Children who have suffered from trauma, neglect or abuse find sand tray therapy helpful as they find it very difficult to express their feelings in words. Any child or adolescent that finds it a challenge to express themselves after a traumatic event will benefit from sand tray therapy.
The importance of Sand tray therapy lies in the healing process of constructing their own microcosm using tiny toys/figures and coloured sand, creating a scene that reflects their own life, allowing them to resolve conflicts by removing conflicts and gaining self-acceptance.
