PLAY THERAPIST BENONI
WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY IN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY?
Play therapy is a form of educational psychotherapy by a registered play therapist used primarily for children to help them deal with emotional and mental health issues. By using toys as a medium, children can explore their feelings in a safe environment and share them with the psychologist/therapist/parents, whether verbally or nonverbally.
Often, children cannot process their emotions/feelings or articulate problems they might be experiencing. By utilising play therapy, a trained educational psychologist can observe and understand a child’s problems and help the child explore the emotions and unresolved trauma. Through this play therapy process, the child can learn new coping skills and mechanisms and redirect unfavourable behaviours.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SESSIONS WITH OUR PLAY THERAPIST BENONI SERVICES?
The main aim of play therapy is to help children discover new ways of understanding their emotions, learn more effective behaviours and understand better ways of dealing with conflict. Play therapy teaches children about self-respect, self-expression, self-control, problem-solving and modifying problem behaviours.
Play Therapy capitalises on the child’s natural ability to express their feelings and to resolve conflicts through play. At Mizu Therapy & Assessment’s play therapist Benoni services, our educational psychologists, Riza van der Merwe and Sunita Patel, uses various media, including storytelling, puppet play, drama, music, dance, sand play, painting and drawing, and board games.
