EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST ASSESSMENTS
WHAT ARE EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST ASSESSMENTS?
Educational psychologist assessments are formal standardised assessments conducted by registered educational psychologists to assess a child’s intellectual and academic abilities. These tests are combined with clinical interviews, observations, and historical data to help the psychologist gain insights into how the child learns and how they are struggling to learn.
The assessments will vary based on a child’s age and focus on measuring the complete aptitude and academic achievements (core skills, such as reading, writing and math). The educational psychologist can utilise several techniques, including pencil and paper activities, verbal responses, and the evaluation of motor skills (e.g., drawing, playing with blocks).
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST ASSESSMENTS?
Educational psychologist assessments help uncover the reasons and information as to why a child might be struggling at school. The test results can help the educational psychologist identify a child’s strengths and weaknesses. By understanding the child’s potential, i.e. if they have a learning disability or if they are gifted, the educational psychologist can provide supportive strategies for the child’s development.
Other concerns as part of the standardised psycho-educational assessment is also examined. These include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and or anxiety. Recommendations and evaluations based on the test results are provided for psychosocial and/or mental health issues.
